Overtime Pay: The Catalyst for a Work-Life Balance Revolution
An IIT professor has proposed that enforcing overtime pay for work beyond 40 hours per week could shift corporate leaders’ perspectives on work-life balance. This suggestion comes in response to Larsen & Toubro Chairman SN Subrahmanyan’s advocacy for a 90-hour work week.
The professor argues that if companies are required to compensate employees for overtime, leaders who currently promote extended working hours might become proponents of healthier work-life balance practices.
This proposal has sparked discussions on social media, with some users supporting the idea, while others believe that compensation should be based on productivity rather than hours worked.
The debate highlights the ongoing conversation about work-life balance and the importance of fair compensation for employees’ time and effort.
In related discussions, Mahindra Group CEO Anish Shah has shared his approach to work-life balance, emphasizing the need for clear priorities and setting boundaries between work and family time.
Shah works 16-18 hours on weekdays to reserve weekends exclusively for his family, demonstrating a personal strategy to manage professional responsibilities while maintaining family commitments.
Additionally, studies have shown that maintaining a work-life balance can enhance leadership efficiency. Managers who disconnect from work during off-hours feel more refreshed and are perceived as more effective leaders by their employees.
These insights contribute to the broader conversation about the significance of work-life balance in today’s professional environment.
